I like May month a lot for obvious reasons. This is the month when clouds gather in the sky. Especially those cotton candy clouds that have mesmerised me. This extreme weather is loved by many artists. The sun light is bright. Clouds move faster. If you love Stop motion photography or time lapse photography this is the season for you.
I love shooting clouds especially long exposure shoots. My shutterspeed is anywhere between 3 mins to 10 mins depending at what time of the day I am shooting. So if you want to do a long exposure shoot during day time all you need is a pair of ND filters. I got two 3 stop (ND8) filters. Even this wouldnt really help me much if I have to shoot a real long exposure of around 3-5 mins in day time. So Hoya R72 came to my rescue as it reduces the light in great extent Thats how I managed to take long exposure shoots.
Thanks to the set of ND filters and Hoya IR filters my wife gifted me as a birthday gift.
But what if you are on a shoot and you forgot to carry one of those filters. There are few tricks you can use to tweak your camera settings and increase the exposure.
Set your camera at manual mode and keep the F-stop to as maximum as you can.
Set your ISO as low as possible. that is must the lesser the ISO setting the greater the duration of exposure. Unfortunately my Nikon D40 allows me to reduce only till 200. but other cameras allow you to keep it as low as 100 or even lesser maybe 80. Lesser the ISO the larger the exposure time.
Second thing you can do is reduce the white balance to -5. This reduces the exposure drastically. But wait! you are not ready yet to shoot. Cause if you shoot at this point it will give underexposed image which you may not want. So you have to reduce the shutterspeed. Reduce it to till you see the arrow reach way left towards the (+) sign.
There you are... ready to shoot long exposure.
This has worked for me many times. So it will surely work for you.
Photo Of The Day
This image was taken from a flyover bridge in my town, Dombivli at around 6 pm.
Clouds were moving faster in the opposite direction which gave the soft effect in my long exposure shoot.
Wish I could spend more time shooting landscapes.
